Don’t miss the Thorne Miniature Rooms

About the experience:

Go to the Art Institute of Chicago, even if you only have time to visit its big prize, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat. Before you leave, be sure to find the Thorne Miniature Rooms. At just 1:12 scale, these rooms are tiny reproductions of period rooms throughout American and European history. Mrs. Thorne was married to James Ward Thorne of the Montgomery Ward department stores. While it’s unclear how her passion began, she enjoyed it so much she commissioned master craftsman to create pieces that met her exacting standards. The result is a set of 68 rooms you’ll see through a filter of historical accuracy.
